Passion Fruit Hurricane Cocktail

Author: Mary DiSomma

Inspired by Mardi Gras, a festival known for its vibrant colors, lively parades, and delicious Creole cuisine, is all about celebrating with flair. I mean, what else are you going to do right before Lent? There’s no better way to get into that festive spirit than with a really good cocktail. The Hurricane is a classic concoction where the sweetness of fresh juice balances out bold spiced rum. It’s not too boozy, so you can definitely enjoy more than one.

Mardi Gras might be a winter festival, but the Hurricane is delicious all year round. I love sipping on one of these at a backyard barbecue or a trip to the farm... Your guests are going to love it too! One of the most interesting parts of a Hurricane cocktail is the glassware. Traditional hurricane glasses were originally inspired by the shape of the hurricane lamp, a type of lantern whose flame wouldn’t go out in strong winds. Of course, you can use whatever type of glassware you like or have on hand, but the Hurricane glass definitely adds some fun, flair. Plus, it’s a built-in conversation piece!

Instructions

  1. In a cocktail shaker, combine both rums, lime juice, orange juice, passion fruit puree, simple syrup, and grenadine. Add ice and shake until well chilled.
  2. Strain the mixture into a glass filled with crushed ice. I like to use an actual hurricane glass, which also works well with my favorite pina colada recipe! Garnish with an orange slice and a cherry!
